Over the course of six months, Zach Both and Nicole Lopez built a contemporary-styled yurt 20 minutes outside of Portland, OR. The exterior structure was constructed in a single weekend with the help of friends and family. As working professionals, the yurt serves as a functional home. Nicole uses the space as a relaxing respite from her job at a nearby hospital, while Zachā€”who previously traveled the country in a converted campervanā€”utilizes the yurt as a home oice for his filmmaking and writing. ā€œItā€™s been incredible to adapt a structure with a history that stretches back thousands of years,ā€ said Zach Both. ā€œIt was our attempt at building a modern yurt for the 21st century.ā€

About the Modern Yurt

Just over 30 feet in diameter, the yurt from Rainier Outdoor has a 730 sq ft living space.
Interior uses water from a well and running electricity. A compost toilet is used in the bathroom and a wood stove heats the yurt during the winter.
A round bedroom loft features a circular planter housing over 45 plants.
